Supply Operations Manager

The Supply Operations Manager will be responsible for executing the company’s operations for sourcing corn residues at its first commercial facility. This position will operate the supply chain for sourcing corn residue from targeted areas near the selected facility to sustainably supply a biorefinery year-round. This job will be located in the Des Moines, IA, area.

Summary of essential job qualitifcations

  • Operate competitive supply chain that delivers corn stover residue to biorefinery.
  • Hire and manage staff including field operation, feedstock scheduling, equipment, and human resource personnel to support supply chain operation.
  • Develop and maintain multi-million dollar budgets regarding supply chain deployment and operation.
  • Oversee field operations personnel that manage harvest, storage, and transport crews involved in commercial corn stover harvesting.
  • Create, define, document, and refine best management practices for supply chain based on biomass yield, soil and land conditions, climatic factors, farm characteristics, and production decisions.
  • Operate pre-commercial supply chain to instigate local market development of feedstock supplies including farmer contracting, equipment operation, inventory management, and secondary market growth.
  • Work with external partners including equipment providers, supply chain operators, and Universities to deploy best-in-class feedstock supply chain technology.
  • Develop safety protocols for employees and contractors to ensure a safe work environment and practices.
  • Focus on cost improvement targets regarding equipment procurement, operation, and staffing.
  • Manage the annual feedstock inventory for a cellulosic ethanol facility with consideration for capacity requirements, storage losses, contracted supplies, and quality.
  • Interface with local farmers, land owners, ethanol facilities, local and regional authorities, and other external parties that are integral to collection of the required feedstocks.
  • Manage operational requirements to adhere to local, state and federal programs for biomass supply chains.
  • Oversee data collection for harvest and storage parameters to determine impacts of different practices on ethanol conversion yields.
  • Accountability for delivering feedstock to the ethanol facility within budget based on required specifications and quantity.

Minimum requirements

  • Five to ten plus years of progressive operational experience preferably in the agricultural industry, with experience in farm equipment operation, renewable fuels (ethanol) and/or the oil industry desired.
  • Experience managing team of personnel including direct and functional reports as well as contractors is an essential qualification.
  • Ability to thrive in a job position and environment that is evolving and in developmental stage.
  • Strong business leader with hands-on technical knowledge and preferably experience working directly with farmers and agricultural operations.
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments under a variety of weather conditions.
  • Must have the solid interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently and also demonstrated performance as a member of successful teams.
  • Experience in daily time management and ability to operate without daily direct oversight.
  • Experience with safety concepts for agricultural machinery and demonstrated record of implementing protocols to ensure safe operations.
  • Experience with large-scale agricultural operations is preferred.
  • Undergraduate degree in an agricultural discipline.
  • Six Sigma and/or LEAN certification desired
