Plant Manager

The Plant Manager is initially responsible and accountable, during the project phase, for planning, assembling and developing an organization that provides input during the project front-end loading (FEL) and is expected to lead start-up and operation of the plant. The Plant Manager is a member of the Project Leadership Team. The Plant Manager is responsible for incorporating manufacturing needs, including operations, product quality and health/safety/environmental standards, into design during the FEL process. The Plant Manager serves as communication link between the manufacturing organization and the Integrated Project Team. The successful candidate should have the background and experience to transition into the role of Plant Manager of the Biofuels Facility after startup. This job will be located in the Des Moines, IA, area.

Summary of essential job qualitifcations

  • Provides manufacturing input on current process operability, operating personnel needs and scope/design considerations and acts as a manufacturing liaison during basic data reviews
  • Reviews process technology risks, suggests alternatives and selects contingency plans where appropriate
  • Assigns operators and required manufacturing representatives for project planning meetings and technical reviews
  • Engages various teams in writing operating and safety procedures, setting up quality systems, establishing spare parts inventories and area equipment files
  • Establishes effective communication procedures within the manufacturing team that incorporates written, verbal and visual modes to maximize safety and effectiveness.
  • Develops systems to train operators and manufacturing personnel required for commissioning, start-up and operation of the facility
  • Works with Readiness-to-Operate (RTO) Lead to set strategies for the sequential turnover and start-up plans
  • Provides appropriate manufacturing support for the checkout, turnover, commissioning and start-up (CTCS) team
  • Leads the “Pre-start up Safety Review” and is accountable for the “Readiness-to-Operate” process.
  • Audits quality records and turnover documentation package
  • Provides link to other plant safety, and manufacturing resources as required. Accountable that the newly built facility meets Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) goals by setting high standards, auditing and developing improvement programs.
  • Ensures operations team supports Management of Change Policy through timely input and commitment to the project process

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor degree in engineering or science or equivalent experience
  • 10 years experience as operations manager for manufacturing processes, experience in the ethanol industry or related processes preferred
  • Strong manufacturing leadership experience which includes exposure to EH&S, Quality, Maintenance and Continuous Improvement systems and tools. Experience supervising people.

  • Leadership skills that drive operational discipline, continuous improvement, and excellence among team members
  • Organizational skills and ability to prioritize and manage tasks
  • Understanding of plant operations, uptime, quality, people systems, safety and environmental requirements
  • Understanding of maintenance excellence and site practices
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of modern manufacturing systems such as Process Safety Management (PSM), ISO 9000, High Performance Work Systems (HPWS), etc.
  • Demonstrated personal commitment to ethical behavior and responsible treatment of people
