Switchgrass is a native North American perennial grass that is highly resistant to pests and plant diseases. It tolerates poor soils, flooding and drought. It takes three years to fully establish. Switchgrass yields throughout the southeast and eastern regions of the U.S. range from 4 tons to 12 tons per acre depending on soil and weather conditions. Advanced varieties under development are expected to have higher yields. We estimate the potential of dedicated energy crops (switchgrass) to produce more than 6 billion gallons per year, with an upper boundary limited only by logistics, cellulosic ethanol demand and the amount of available marginal lands.
