Corncob :: Switchgrass

Corncob

We selected corncob for developing our first commercial-scale biorefinery because it can use the existing starch-ethanol infrastructure in the U.S. corn belt. Of the residues of corn production, cob yields about .6 tons per acre. It has twice the bulk density of stover and 16% more carbohydrate content than stover alone. It can be removed from the field without affecting soil quality and carbon sequestration. We estimate there is a potential to produce 2 billion to 4 billion gallons per year of cellulosic ethanol from corncob.
